Das Boot

Das Boot is a 2018 German television production for Sky Drama and is a sequel to the original 1981 Das Boot feature film.

Similar to the original film, the series is based on Lothar-Günther Buchheim’s 1973 book Das Boot, but with additions from Buchheim’s 1995 sequel Die Festung. As the original film’s plot ends in December 1941, the series’ setting takes place nine months later, in 1942.

The storyline is split into two narratives, one based on land around the French resistance, the other set around a German U-boat crew.

For this amazing project we used our Alexa Mini drone and our primary role was to capture VFX plates which would later be used by the VFX artists and animators to create the final submarine scenes. That said, the drone was an essential part of the production workflow and was also used for establishing GVs and also simple binocular shots.

“By using drones that have been custom designed for film and television work, the Aerialworx team are quickly becoming the UK’s number one aerial photogrammetry and VFX plates experts. Using their state-of-the-art 8K RED Monstro, Alexa Mini and 6K DJI Inspire2, they have captured clean VFX plates and full photogrammetry packages for a number of productions including BBC Dr Who, BBC War of the Worlds, ITV Victoria, BBC The Worst Witch, Macallan Whisky, Motorpoint, Activision Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, BAC Mono and First Trans Pennine Express.

Due for release in mid to late 2019.
